Southern Paving & Milling: A Growth Opportunity in Essential Infrastructure
When we first evaluated Southern Paving & Milling, we knew we'd found something special. Here at 5th Century Partners, we're always on the lookout for companies operating in the essential maintenance and repair services space—businesses that provide recurring, predictable revenue streams. Southern Paving & Milling checked every box.
Since its founding in 2011, the company has experienced strong growth driven by consistent demand for its comprehensive suite of paving services and exceptional customer service. What started as a Fort Myers, Florida-based operation has expanded throughout Florida and Georgia, with ambitious plans to stretch across the entire Southeastern United States. This disciplined growth trajectory reflects the strength of the underlying business model and the quality of its management.
Finding the Right Partner
We were particularly impressed by the company's leadership. CEO Alex DeMarco brings more than 25 years of leadership experience to the table, with six years specifically at Southern Paving & Milling. When we spoke with Alex about the business, his perspective stood out to us.
"What I love about our business might be something most people get frustrated with – fixing damaged roads and orange cones," Alex told us. “The reality is that highways, streets and parking lots require constant maintenance due to normal wear and tear, weather and other adverse events.” This creates an environment of growing and recurring demand, which aligns well with our investment thesis in the essential maintenance and repair services space.
Southern Paving & Milling was founded by Daniel Banks, and his family still holds an equity ownership position in the company.
The Investment Opportunity
Our enthusiasm also stems from what we see ahead. We believe there's a significant opportunity for both geographic and add-on expansion across the Southeast. The region continues to experience strong demographic and population growth trends that point toward sustained, long-term demand for new paving surfaces and a steady stream of repair work. With more than 160 employees and a diversified customer base spanning the Department of Transportation, municipal and private sector clients, Southern Paving & Milling has the infrastructure to scale.
This is where we add value. 5th Century Partners provides more than capital—we bring operating expertise and strategic relationships across our network. We're activating that network now, connecting our team of experienced operators and advisors with Alex and his management team to accelerate growth across the Southeast.
Looking Ahead
This investment underscores our strategy of identifying resilient, in-demand businesses and partnering with exceptional management teams to unlock significant value creation. Southern Paving & Milling has the market position, operational excellence and leadership team to achieve outsized growth, and we're genuinely excited to help the company realize that potential.
